Fire Safety Tips When Camping

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Fire safety is always a concern whether you’re at home or work. And that concern shouldn’t leave you on your next camping trip. When enjoying the great outdoors, fire safety should be of the utmost importance. Here is a few tips to put into practice next time you go camping to ensure you have a safe trip:

  1. Keep campfires in a designated area and away from brush, trees and your tent/trailer. Adhere to any campground rules stating that fires must be put out at a certain time. If there is a fire ring use it and under no circumstances move it.
  2. Only use gas/propane stoves in well ventilated areas and if they are allowed.
  3. If RV or trailer camping, check the batteries in any smoke detectors yearly.
  4. Always try to light a fire without the use of lighter fluid first. Lighter fluid should only be utilized under must use circumstances. And there a very few must use circumstances for lighter fluid.
  5. When using a charcoal grill, keep a safe distance away from your tent/trailer. And as mentioned above, go easy on the lighter fluid when starting the grill. Most charcoal briquettes don’t require lighter fluid these days.
  6. Always have a fire extinguisher nearby and most importantly make sure all campers are aware of how to use it.
  7. Always make sure your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving it unattended. This is a major no-no and is the reason for many forest fires.
